Let’s go behind the scenes with the founder, designer and creator of Northern Tides Studio, Amanda Esposito. Just Jersey has been carrying Amanda's designs since the spring of 2022. We've loved seeing her jewelry line expand, offering new options for our beach-loving customers. Amanda recently left her position as an art teacher to pursue her creative passion and focus on her growing company. Born in New Milford, Amanda returned after college to settle down in her home state.
What is the story/inspiration behind your jewelry?
My jewelry is inspired by the beauty of the ocean's waves and our deep connection to water. Growing up, I spent many summers along the coast where my love for the ocean began. The gentle lapping of the waves and the salty breeze are etched in my memory, inspiring me to capture these moments in my jewelry.
As an art teacher, I draw upon my training and experiences to create pieces that not only reflect the beauty of the ocean, but also create a sense of nostalgia and joy. After reading Wallace J. Nichols' 'Blue Mind,' I was struck by the profound impact of water on our well-being. This inspired me to create pieces that serve as a reminder of the calming and rejuvenating effects of the ocean.
What makes your jewelry stand out?
I hand-paint each piece in my collection to capture the essence of ocean waves. The beauty lies in the fact that no two pieces are identical, showcasing the artistry and craftsmanship that make my jewelry truly unique. My pieces are crafted to evoke the deep emotional connection we feel with the ocean, translating that feeling into wearable art.
What are your current best sellers?
My #1 best seller is my “Waves of Life” necklace followed by “Solace of the Sea” and one of my newest necklaces called “Ocean Love.” I’m seeing that customers are really loving how each piece is slightly different from one another which gives customers an opportunity to purchase the piece that speaks to them.
What new or interesting pieces have you introduced in 2024 and why?
In 2024, I've introduced several new pieces to my collection. Building on the success of my 'Waves of Life' necklace, I've added matching 'Waves of Life' earrings, offering customers a complete set to complement their style. The response to these earrings has been incredibly positive, encouraging me to expand my range further.
I also recently launched the “Jersey Tides'' necklace that is inspired by the Jersey shore. This piece was created for people who love the natural beauty of our coastline and want to carry those special memories of their favorite coastal community wherever they go. Looking ahead, I have several more pieces in development that I can't wait to unveil later this year. Each piece is crafted with the same passion and dedication to quality that defines my collection, and I'm excited to see how they resonate with my customers.
What trends are you seeing with customers (styles, features, patterns, etc.)
Customers are seeking jewelry that they feel personally connected to. So many of us have our own stories and memories of places we’ve traveled to that are around water. I believe people are seeking pieces that add personal value and uniqueness to their collection. Ocean statement pieces are going to be a big trend this year because it enables people to wear their cherished memories and take them wherever they go.
Amanda has a favorite childhood memory from Ocean Grove, where she would visit with her family. Driving to the shore in the evenings on the night of a full moon, the family would picnic on the beach after the crowds have left for the day. They would stay for hours stargazing, watching the moon over the water and listening to the waves crash onto the shore. It is her own special memories like these that inspire her to create the pieces for her jewelry brand.
Designing jewelry is not just a business for me; it's a passion. I strive to create high quality pieces that resonate with people's love for the ocean and awaken cherished memories they hold close to them.
